AMALGAMA invites all Ibero-American Women Artists* to submit entries to our First Annual Open Call Competition launched as part of our ongoing platform dedicated exclusively to exhibiting, promoting and publishing the work of Ibero-American Women Artists internationally.

We will select 8 artists to be exhibited in London in May 2020. Their work and portfolio will also be published and analysed by selected writers and curators in our second publication. 

This year, we have selected four outstanding jurors: Philippa Adams, Senior Director at the Saatchi Gallery London, working directly on the collection, new acquisitions and commissions; Oliver Basciano, art critic, International Editor at ArtReview and juror of the 2018 Turner Prize; Kiki Mazzucchelli is an independent curator, editor and author of a number of publications focusing on art from Latin America; and Susan McDonald, artist and entrepreneur, member of the Tate acquisition committee of Latin American art.

We are calling artists to submit work in any medium. The 2020 exhibition will focus on notions of nature, bodies and digital media. As today's technology is challenging the way we interact, embody and confront the concepts of nature and culture, we ask artists to propose, question or defend their positions on the following:

• Can nature still be defined as everything that is not created by human beings?

• Can we engage with notions of nature without embodying it?

• How has technology and digital media affected the tension between our bodies, nature and culture?

• How was digital media affected the dichotomy between nature and nurture within our bodies?

• Are our bodies still a part of nature or are they determined within a social and political context?

We do not expect you to solve the tension between nature, history and modern technology, but rather to explore and develop it. Your work does not have to address all the subjects together but, it has to incorporate at least two elements to contribute to the theme.

Guidelines

• *We accept the work of women artists or whoever identifies themselves as women.

• *Artists should have an Ibero-American heritage: i) born in Central or South America, Mexico, Spain or Portugal, ii) have parents from these countries, iii) lived enough time in these countries that their identity or art practice has been determined by such heritage.

• Artists’ practice does not have to be based in the UK or Europe. Nevertheless, the work needs to be placed in London by the artist prior to the beginning of the exhibition on 12 May 2020. Amalgama will not cover shipping or transportation costs of the work.

• Only one work per entry.

• If you are submitting a series, this is considered one work. We recommend submitting one image which shows the whole series together (ie. The series hanging on a wall) then further images to show the detail. Alternatively, you could create a single document file which is made up of multiple images (ie. Like a collage or tiles)

• Works previously exhibited and published elsewhere are accepted.

• Collaborative works are accepted.

• Works produced within the last three years are preferred, although works made at any time before submission can be entered.

• There is no size limit, although the size of the work in relation to the exhibition space will be a consideration in the shortlisting process.

• 8 artists will be selected for the exhibition.

• If you are selected, you will be asked to supply your artwork for the exhibition in London, UK. Artists selected for the exhibition will be responsible for all transportation (delivery and collection) costs of artworks.

• Selected artworks should be available for sale during the exhibition. If sold, Amalgama will receive a 30% commission to be reinvested into the nonprofit company for future projects.

• Selected artists must authorise the use of images of the artwork (and extended portfolio) to be used in promotional material and be included in the book that will be produced as a result of the exhibition.
  
  

Timeline

• 7 November 2019 – 8 January 2020: Entries open

• 9 January 2020: Judging begins

• 29 of January 2020: Shortlist announced

• 12 May 2020: Exhibition opens.
