The Beginning of the Avant Gardes

The Short Course on the Beginning of Modernism in Latin America is an exciting exploration of the various artistic movements that emerged in the region in the early 20th century. The course will focus on a group of artists who were at the forefront of these movements, and who explored both the idea of a universal art and the pursuit of their own national identity. This course includes 6 masterclasses where you will learn about their historical and cultural context, highlighting the ways in which they responded to the complex realities of their time. By studing their artworks in depth alongside their lives stories, and their relatioships, you will explore the ways in which these artists grappled with the tension between the desire to create a universal art that transcended national boundaries, and the desire to assert their own unique cultural identities. By the end of the course, you will have gained a deep appreciation for the diverse and exciting contributions of these artists, and will be able to apply this knowledge to your own creative and intellectual pursuits.
Este Curso Corto sobre los inicios del modernismo en América Latina es una exploración apasionante sobre los diversos movimientos artísticos que surgieron en la región a principios del siglo XX. El curso se centrará en un grupo de artistas que estuvieron al frente de estos movimientos y que exploraron tanto la idea de un arte universal como la búsqueda de su propia identidad nacional. Este curso incluye 6 masterclasses, aprenderás sobre su contexto histórico y cultural, destacando las formas en que respondieron a las complejas realidades de su tiempo. Tendrás la oportunidad de estudiar sus obras de arte en profundidad junto con sus historias de vida y sus relaciones, para explorar las formas en que estos artistas enfretaron la tensión entre el deseo de crear un arte universal que trascendiera las fronteras nacionales y el deseo de afirmar su propia cultura e identidad. Al final del curso, habrás ganado un profundo aprecio por las contribuciones diversas y emocionantes de estos artistas, que te permitirá aplicar este conocimiento a tus propias actividades creativas e intelectuales.

About the lecturer

Daniela Galan

Daniela Galan is the founder and director of Amalgama. She is a registered lecturer at the Arts Society in the United Kingdom and has over 17 years of research in art history and philosophy. She has focused her investigation on artists from Latin America, especially female artists whose work remains underrepresented within the art industry. This was the founding purpose of Amalgama, which led her to curate numerous exhibitions, forums and publications since its inception in 2018.
